According to Napa Valley Vintners, the region offers volcanic soil which gives Cabernet Sauvignon grapes an earthy flavor. Morning fog drifting off San Pablo Bay helps slow ripening processes, leading to better grape growing conditions.
The Napa area was settled about 10,000 years ago by Native Americans who called the area “Talahalusi.” The Suscol Intertribal Council estimated about 30,000 inhabited the area, lived in pole houses and used clamshells for trading. Natives lived off a landscape teeming with acorns, salmon, grasses, berries and wild game.
George Calver Young staked the first vineyard in 1839–the same year John Sutter landed in California and later established Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento. Industry growth flourished during the next 20 years.
Chinese Immigrants arrived to work as field hands, miners and railroad employees. They established the first Chinatown in an area later incorporated as part of Napa city. Thousands of Chinese settlers eventually lived in Chinatown settlements throughout Napa County.
In 1861, Charles Krug hammered the final nails into Napa’s first winery and initiated a grape industry that outlasted Sutter’s California Gold Rush.
